XX. Gottfried von Haberler Conference
Guest Speakers: Malte Fischer

Malte Fischer is a native of Germany and studied economics. He earned his Diplom Ökonom degree at the Ruhr University in Bochum (D). In 1990 Fischer began to work as an academic staff researcher at the Kiel Institute for World Economy (IfW Kiel), and specialized there in business cycle research and trade policy. During his tenure at the IfW Kiel, Fischer contributed to the spring and fall Joint Economic Forecasts (GD) of Germany‘s most important economic research institutes. These comprehensive semiannual reports are policy projections and aim to analyze the German and the world economy, while also providing in-depth policy recommendations for the German Federal Government.

After seven years at the IfW Kiel, Fischer teamed up with the Wirtschafts Woche, a leading weekly German business news magazine. The Wirtschafts Woche promoted him to Chief Economist in 2010. His countless reports and analyses were among the most read articles. In 2025, Fischer joined the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) and currently works as business editor in Berlin. His focus is predominantly on international trade policy, regulatory issues, Ordnungspolitik, and problems related to the Social Market Economy.
