“By giving the government unlimited powers, the most arbitrary rule can be made legal; and in this way a democracy may set up the most complete despotism imaginable.” – Friedrich A. von Hayek (Nobel Prize 1974)

On the Morality of the State
and the State of Political Morals

Über die Hybris der Staaten und den Zustand politischer Moral

Gottfried von Haberler Conference 2020 | The 16th International Gottfried v. Haberler Conference will take place on May 29, 2020 at University of Liechtenstein in Vaduz. Conference topic: On the Morality of the State and the State of Political Morals. The event will be organized and hosted by ECAEF – European Center of Austrian Economics Foundation. The support of the University of Liechtenstein and multiple local and international sponsors is gratefully acknowledged.

The unrestricted growth of the state and the rise of the “transfer society” have not only weakened the moral fabric of our societies and amplified the payoff from political action. The rapid expansion of government programs have also substituted an ethos of dependence for an ethos of individual freedom and responsibility. Today’s way to put up with ever more choking regulations fueled by high taxes is not to take responsibility for one’s own life and family, but to vote for politicians who have the power to keep the welfare checks rolling. Thus, the task is not to reinvent government or to give politics more meaning. Rather, the task is to revitalize civil society.
